First Grade September Newsletter

Welcome to our monthly newsletter. This month we will be learning lots of new information.

Literacy:

We will be spending the month of September working on standards:

1RL3 characters, setting and major events in story

1L1a prints upper and lowercase letters

1RL1 asks and answer questions about key details in text

SL1a follow agreed-upon rules for discussion

1RF2c isolate and pronounce initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in spoken single syllable words

1Rf2d segment single syllable words into their complete sequence of individual sounds (phonemes)

1RF3b decode regularly spelled one syllable words

1L1b use common, proper, and possessive nouns

1RF2b orally produce single syllable words by blending sounds (phonemes) including consonant blends

1RL2 retells stories, understand central message or lesson.

Also, we will be reading one story per week out of our reading text. The students’ spelling, vocabulary and high frequency words will come from these stories.

 

 

 

 

Mathematics

*Read bar/picture graphs

*Calendar

*number recognition 1-120

Practice counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s

10 less and 10 more than any given number

 

Social Studies

Our first topics will include where we live including our city, state, county, continent, and country. 

The students will also learn location and name of each Continent. This month we will also study patriotic symbols and the history and meaning behind each.

Please review these at home with your child.

 

Science: We have completed our unit on magnets.

 

Homework is assigned Monday-Thursday every week, except for weeks when testing occurs.

 

Homework is an important part of learning.  Please look for your child’s homework in his or her HW folder in the binder.  The assignment may be written homework or a specific task.  Please return papers in your child’s homework Folder daily or when assigned.

 

Always complete 20 minutes of reading daily and practice sight words.

 

 

 

Please label all monies with child’s name/teacher and use of money!!
